Unstoppable in the face of all odds, Nanik Rupani, who believes that success is our birthright, has proven that one does not have to be extraordinarily placed to rise in life. This biography is a saga which unfolds the life of Nanik Rupani and affords a lesson to young readers to live through life meaningfully and satisfyingly. more
Understanding Islamic Law (Shari'a) is the first comprehensive textbook and treatise on Islamic law written by an American law professor for the English-speaking market. Written by Raj Bhala, Rice Distinguished Professor at the University of Kansas, School of Law, the book is the first to systematically compare and contrast Islamic law with American law and Christian teaching. Even as legislatures in 20 states consider more than 40 bills that would ban or restrict the use of Shari'a in their courts, global practitioners are no longer immune from the influences of Islamic law. This book is an Indian Reprint of the UK edition....

The present selection is an attempt to represent the wide range and variety of Mulk Raj Anands short stories. The first group represents the stories of lyric awareness. As in all poetry, the themes are elemental, such as birth and death, beauty, love and childhood, and the treatment often reveals a symbolic dimension added to realistic presentation. The prevailing mood of the second group of stories in this selection is of the tears at the heart of things. These stories are naturally allied to the brief tales of lyric awareness but with a difference. Through his acute understanding of the complex social forces at work, Anand describes an India where tradition clashes with modernity. The range and variety of Anands short stories are not only in mood, tone and spirit but also in locale, characters and form. The setting ranges from the Punjab (as in The Parrot in the Cage) to Uttar Pradesh (as in The Price of Bananas) and Kashmir (as in Kashmir Idyll). Both the village and the city get almost equal representation. Mulk Raj Anands stories are a museum of human nature. Among the Indian writers of the short story in English, he has few peers....

more
Bhagat Singh ( 1907- 1931) lived at a time when India’s freedom struggle was beginning to flag and when Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violent, passively resistant approach to partial liberation was beginning to test the patience of the people. The youth of India was inspired by Bhagat Singh’s call to arms and enthused by the defiance and dare-devilry of the army wing of the Hindustan Socialist Republican association to which he and his comrades, Sukhdev and Rajguru, belonged. His call, Inquilab Zindabad! became the war-cry of the fight for freedom. When Bhagat Singh was executed by the British after a sham trial for his involvement in the Lahore Conspiracy Case at the age of twenty-three, he was glorified by the Indians as a martyr – for his youth, his heroism, and his steadfast courage in the face of certain death. It was only many years later – after Independence in 1947– that his jail writings came to light. Today, it is these works that set Bhagat Singh apart from the many revolutionaries who laid down their lives for India. They reveal him as not just a passionate freedom-fighter who believed in the cult of the bomb but a widely-read intellectual inspired by the writings of, among others, Marx, Lenin, Bertrand Russell and Victor Hugo; a revolutionary whose vision did not end with the ouster of the British, but who looked further, towards a secular, socialist India. In this book, Nayar takes a close look at the man behind the martyr: his beliefs, his intellectual leanings, his dreams and his despair. This book explains for the first time why Hans Raj Vohra turned approver and betrayed Bhagat Singh and throws new light on Sukhdev, whose loyalties have been questioned by some historians. But most of all it puts in perspective Bhagat Singh’s use of violence, so strongly condemned by Gandhi and many others as being extremist. Erudite and engaging, this book is a fascinating portrait of one of India’s greatest freedom fighter and a man of rare intellectual honesty....
